Do guests need to install an app?

Not necessarily. A photo and message wall can be scoped so guests submit through a mobile web page opened from a QR code or short link. In that journey, there is no dedicated event app to download. Build a fallback that preserves participation

A resilient plan offers more than a technical error message. Staff might provide an assisted submission device, record a text message for later entry or direct guests to retry when connectivity improves. A temporary holding screen can keep the display intentional while the submission feed is unavailable. Any fallback involving staff handling a guest’s device or personal content should use clear operating boundaries.

Prepare printed or locally stored instructions so the team is not dependent on the same connection as the wall. Keep the destination link available in plain text as well as through a QR code. Assign responsibility for submission support, moderation, display monitoring and escalation instead of treating the installation as an unattended screen.

Privacy and consent considerations

Selfies, names and personal messages may contain personal data. The organiser should determine what notice, consent, retention and deletion arrangements are appropriate for the event and applicable requirements. Explain how submitted material may be displayed, photographed or otherwise used. Collect only the information needed for the agreed experience, restrict operational access where appropriate and confirm how content will be handled after the event. The implementation decision

If the priority is low-friction participation, a browser-based submission route is often the first option to assess. It avoids asking guests to install a dedicated app, but it does not eliminate the need for testing, permissions, connectivity, moderation and clear support. If an event app already forms part of the guest journey, integrating the wall there may be more coherent. The final choice should be documented against the audience, venue, content policy and agreed technical scope.
