After exploring several concepts, Biosensors’ team gravitated towards our proposal for a vibrant 90s retro theme — an era of boombox beats, neon colours, and bold fashion that promised to spark conversation and create a genuinely playful atmosphere.

Our Approach — Designing a Nostalgia-Fuelled Experience

With the 90s retro concept approved, our creative team developed a comprehensive event blueprint that extended the theme across every touchpoint — from the very first invitation to the final lucky draw announcement. The goal was total immersion: we wanted guests to feel like they’d genuinely stepped back in time the moment they arrived.

Our event planning approach included:

• Themed event collaterals: Custom-designed printed and email invitations featuring 90s-inspired graphics, neon colour palettes, and retro typography to build anticipation weeks before the event
• Venue site visits: Multiple recce sessions to plan the ballroom layout, lighting positions, stage dimensions, and guest flow

Venue Transformation & Retro Décor

The visual experience was critical to the success of this corporate Dinner and Dance. From the moment guests approached the entrance, they were greeted by a spectacular balloon arch entrance decked out in neon pinks, electric blues, and bold yellows — instantly signalling that this was no ordinary corporate event.

Inside the ballroom, we installed a 24ft x 10ft stage PVC backdrop featuring vibrant retro designs that served as the visual centrepiece of the evening. The space was further transformed with ambient lighting, neon accents, and retro-themed table settings. Cut-out standees of iconic 90s pop culture references became instant hits among guests, who queued up to take photos and share them on social media.

The crown jewel of the décor was the Glow Bar — a neon-lit drinks station complete with glowing signs and quirky retro accessories. It became the most popular photo spot of the evening, offering guests both a refreshing drink and a shareable photo moment.

Entertainment & Performances

Guests were captivated by performances from Vivienne and Ze, who delivered crowd-pleasing sets that had the audience singing along, and a high-energy retro-themed dance performance by The Unemployed that brought the house down with choreography and costumes straight out of the 90s.

Stage Production & AV

Challenges & How We Overcame Them

Creating an Authentic 90s Atmosphere in a Modern Ballroom

Hotel ballrooms are designed to be neutral and versatile, which works against a strongly themed event. Transforming a contemporary space into something that genuinely evoked the 90s required more than just a few decorations. We worked closely with our décor suppliers to source period-appropriate props, designed custom backdrops and standees in-house, and used lighting design to shift the ambiance entirely. The Glow Bar, in particular, required careful engineering to achieve the neon-lit effect while remaining functional as a serving station.

Keeping 150 Guests Engaged Across a Full Evening

D&D events can sometimes lose momentum between the dinner service and the main programme. We addressed this by layering engagement touchpoints throughout the evening — fringe activities ran concurrently during arrival and intermissions, the Rolling Lucky Draw created regular moments of excitement, and the emcee kept energy high with audience interaction segments.
